If you are using Windows XP, in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows 2000 and if you are receiving this error then you have to install Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll, and Mssip32.dl files in your system so that this error can be fixed, follow the given steps to do this:-

• Open notepad and then copy the given below commands in the notepad:-

            regsvr32 Softpub.dll /s
            regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s
            regsvr32 Initpki.dll /s
            regsvr32 Mssip32.dll /s

• Then go to the file menu and from the file menu click on Save As option and then type the file name Register. Bat.
• Then click on Save as type option, then click All Files.
•  Now save the Register.bat file in your system desktop.
•  To register the windows update files you need to double click on the saved Register.bat file.
• Then again try to start updates. If this error has been fixed then delete the saved  register.bat file from your desktop.

You can also use this second method to fix this error and this time you need to install the Wintrust.dll file and to do this:-

• Click on start button and in the search box type cmd and then press enter.
• Type the administrator password and then click on continue option.
• In the command prompt type the regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s command.
• Then Exit the command prompt and then try to have updates again.
